Responding to the Hattersley Looms

Current exhibition at Bradford Industrial Museum, Feb 2022 to 2023

Charcoal sketch of shaft dobby mechanism Hattersley Loom Bradford Industrial Museum

I was invited to collaborate in a joint exhibition with artist colleagues from Keighley Creative, focusing on items to be found in museums in Bradford West Yorkshire UK. I was immediately drawn to the combing, spinning and weaving machinery in Bradford Industrial Museum. The fact that Keighley was at the heart of the design and development of weaving machines resonated with my creative connection with this town. Hattersley’s name was proudly cast on prominent parts of the cast-iron framework.

I was excited by the abstract patterns formed by light through the dark metallic tangle of cogs and levers in the Hattersley looms, and did a number of sketches on the spot, and a lot of photos, from which I produced two mixed media collages.
